A extensive rescue and recovery operation is actively ongoing in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing sailing vessels transporting humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Rescue Efforts Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and search planes to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board no fewer than nine sailors, according to a official statement.

The vessels had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their docking, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Island

The island nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through multiple national electricity failures.

"Both captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are fitted with proper safety equipment and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort commented.

The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their consular staff.

"The group is working closely with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Earlier Humanitarian Mission

Just days before, the Cuban government widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had carried 14 tons of relief supplies to the island.

That vessel, called "a modern Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, drugs, baby formula, bikes and provisions.

Wider Geopolitical Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the country began.

The United Nations have since warned of ""critical" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50k surgeries called off in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Foreign policy tensions have increased over the past months, with comments from several leaders underscoring the complicated situation regarding diplomatic ties.

In response to previous statements, a senior official from Cuba stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that early stages of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains unclear.

The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using every available asset at its disposal to discover the vessels and secure the security of the crews.

To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
