This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
