The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
