The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people were killed and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
