No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
