Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
