In Such Poor Health I Couldn’t Walk Until a Fellow Passenger Virtually Carried Me to a Bathroom.
During my 19 years old, my regular journey to work involved an packed public transport. It remained crowded and invariably became without any seats once I got on.
On one specific day, I started experiencing quite nauseous when the coach swayed around the bends. I continuously reassured myself to endure just a little longer so the bus could reached my destination, and then I could rush hurriedly to the closest public restroom to be sick.
The bus was approaching the road leading to the destination as I understood I was unable to make it. In an instant, it felt as if a veil came over me. Everything just went blank and silent; as if someone cut the sound. I thought, “I am about to pass out”.
Thankfully, I was positioned toward the front of the bus, so I managed a couple of steps forward and asked the driver to pull over, informing him I needed to vomit. He promptly opened the bus doors and I hurriedly stepped on to the pavement.
I was determined to avoid being sick in front of multiple lanes of cars, so I picked myself up and started trying to walk across to the park on the other side, where I believed I’d at least be able to find some privacy behind a bush to be sick. Yet I must have blacked out. I could feel my body but I was unable to walk and my vision was blurry, leading me to start crawling towards my intended destination.
“Everything alright, love?”
At that moment, I got scooped up. I sensed a strong arm supporting me and a man’s voice asked, “Everything alright, love?” I told this kind passerby that I had to to be sick. Thus, he practically carried me over to an adjacent building and put me inside the women’s restroom. He inquired if I needed him to stay with me but I declined.
After a short while, I regained my composure enough to sit on the toilet and from the other side of the door I heard him ask, “Are you OK, love? Is there anything you require?” I was incapable to stand up at that moment but I did succeed to express my gratitude and shortly thereafter was able to move my limbs. I returned home and then spent several days getting over which was a horrible case of gastroenteritis.
I never glimpsed the stranger’s face – just his lower half along with a sizable metal toolbox he was carrying – yet he rescued me, during a time when I was completely helpless.
Frequently, society tends to make people guarded, hostile, and combative. His was the sort of gesture that melts away that hardening of the heart. He served as evidence that humanity’s innate tendency is towards kindness, a trait I cherish in other people.
