Following a festive period filled with rich foods and downtime, numerous individuals enter the new year looking to get their fitness back on track.

But, is it possible that Artificial Intelligence be changing the fitness industry by offering an alternative to personal trainers?

Personalized Plans and Adaptable Timelines

Leah Walsh employed an artificial intelligence application for impromptu preparation for the a major running event.

This young woman hailing from a town in Wales explained she liked the freedom to ask it questions at all hours – a feature she felt was not possible with a personal trainer.

Leah used an AI-powered fitness application that provided her customized schedules with audio coaching and speed targets for her inaugural long-distance race in recent years.

She explained she asked it to design a regimen merging running and the gym, and it produced an multi-week programme tailored to her race date and goals.

Leah then tweaked the plan to suit her daily routine, which she said was highly practical.

The following year, she chose a different tool because it was more affordable and she could consult it whenever she wanted. Her result was a full minute quicker than her target finish.

She said she wanted to avoid the pressure from a human personal trainer.

"With AI you have to motivate yourself, which I actually prefer," she added.

Remarkable Fitness Improvements

Meanwhile, Richard Gallimore, 23, from Swansea, has been employing artificial intelligence for his fitness and diet plans, and said he has achieved peak strength, boosting his chest press from a lower weight to 110kg.

Richard resorted to a AI assistant for help after being forced to walk a race.

"I realized I need to get myself in shape," he said.

This no-cost application built a fitness and meal program tailored to his goals, and created structured routines.

"I train for about 120 minutes a day and I've seen a real difference," he added.

The Cost Contrast: AI vs. Traditional Training

A recent survey in the previous year compared costs for 17 of the largest gym brands and found the average membership cost was approximately forty pounds a month, based on standard memberships.

Prices started at £23 at the most affordable chain to a premium rate at the highest-priced.

According to industry research, fitness coaches determine their own fees, usually £30-£65 per hour-long appointment outside London and about a similar range in London.

Clients will often hire a trainer once or twice a week and collaborate for a few months, but these arrangements are completely flexible.

Fitness expert Dafydd Judd believes artificial intelligence will never replace the human connection that comes from face-to-face coaching.

The Essential Personal Element

Personal trainer one experienced professional, based in Cardiff, acknowledged artificial intelligence can be useful to accelerate results, but believes it will never replace the human connection and responsibility that in-person coaching provides.

The 37-year-old, who has over a decade of experience as a trainer, specialises in senior clients and injury rehabilitation. He mentioned a number of his trainees also use technology.

"In my opinion it's very valuable, additional information is good," he stated.
"I think the more that people are online the more they'll desire human connection because they want the warmth from the comprehension that is absent from a machine," he continued.

Dafydd said AI can inform clients and make guidance more efficient.

However, he argued true dedication comes when people appear in person for their sessions.

"No matter how helpful as it is at the middle of the night, a digital tool cannot ensure you show up at 7am before work," Dafydd added.

For many, he said, the fitness center is a space to disconnect from devices and take a break from technology.
