The White House disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

While Vought provided no details on which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
