A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future free from concern.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
